The Visit
Sam and Rose opened a hand laundry in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. The work was hard and they really didn't like the neighborhood.
Sam had a brother in Atlantic City who told Sam to move there. He would get Sam a job as an insurance man. They moved to Atlantic City where grandfather Steve was born. When Sam's brother decided to move to the West Coast where the streets were paved with gold, Sam and Rose decided to move west too. They would move to western Pennsylvania where Rose's two brothers lived in Erie.
On the way to Erie, they stopped to visit the mishpoicha in Philadelphia.
Rose's two sisters, Sonya and Yetta, and her brother-in-law, Menashe lived in Philadelphia. The Jaroslaw family would come to Philadelphia for a week or two before moving to Erie.
They arrived at the Korostoff house on Girard Avenue a little after Noon. Sonya and Manuel were so happy to welcome them. They gave Rose and Sam their bedroom. It was big and airy. It had three enormous windows.
It was tops.
The afternoon flew by. Every one admired little Steve, every one talked. Dinner was especially festive.
When the Jaroslaws retired to the bedroom, they discovers that trolleys passed the window every 15 minutes. The trolleys were very noisy. As the trolleys rumbled by the windows and the room shook.
Early the next morning, they came downstairs already packed. One noisy night was enough for them. They never did fall asleep. They left for Erie, Pennsylvania and the peace and quiet of the small town.
